Biography:
Harry Belafonte was born Harold George Bellanfanti Jr. on March 1, 1927, and was a singer, songwriter, activist, and actor. He recorded and performed in many genres, including blues, folk, gospel, show tunes, and American Standards. He was one of the frontrunners in what would later be known as world music. He has also starred in several films.
Belafonte was a close friend and confidant of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and an early supporter of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and 1960s. Throughout his career, he was an advocate for political and humanitarian causes.
