The Moravian Brass Band was formed early in the twentieth century shortly after a congregation of the Moravian Church was founded in Mount Road in 1898. In 1949 the congregation was forced to move to Schauderville in terms of the Group Areas Act, and the congregation became known as the Salem Moravian Church, with the name of the band changing accordingly.

The band has traveled widely in South Africa, and has toured to Germany in 1994 and 2004 as well as to the USA in 2009 and 2018. Performances included a brass band festival in Ulm, with a massed band consisting of about 8 000 players, the Moravian Music Festival in Charlotte, North Carolina, and in 2018 the Moravian Unity Band Festival in Winston-Salem. Besides playing in churches, the bands perform numerous other functions in and around Port Elizabeth for the community at large.
The band has over the last few years produced several players who went on to become professional musicians and music educators.
