'Atlantic' is a feature documentary following the fortunes of fishing communities across the North Atlantic affected by the huge increase in oil activity off their coasts. On both sides of the Atlantic, oil and gas frontiers are opening up, pushing deeper in to the Atlantic and further north into the Arctic. Coastal communities in Ireland, Norway and Newfoundland are facing the dilemma choosing between traditional fishing and more lucrative oil and gas income. 'Atlantic' follows the fortunes of fishermen as they struggle to maintain their way of life despite huge challenges within their own industry and the threat from the oil industry. 'Atlantic' charts how the hydrocarbon resources of the North Atlantic have been managed, from strong local control in Norway and Newfoundland, to liberalisation in Ireland, and asks the question: in whose benefit is the exploitation of these resources.
