Portable Air: A/C Installation Types If you can’t install an air conditioner in your window or through a wall, then portable air conditioners are a great solution. Portables work just like all other air conditioners: they cool, dehumidify, and filter the air in your room. Also like any other air conditioner, however, that hot humid air must go somewhere… so portable air conditioners utilize a vent hose. This vent hose will extend up to seven feet in length. The open end of the vent hose is attached directly to a window kit. This window kit is designed to sit right on the windowsill. You close your window down on top, trapping it in place. The open end of the vent hose simply attaches to the window kit so all of that hot, humid air is exhausted outside your home.

Portable windowless air conditioners are also great as a supplemental air conditioning unit for central air. Everybody has that one room of their home where that central air conditioning is just not cool enough; this is a great solution. They’re also great if you're looking to air condition a basement where the windows are small and you can’t install a unit through a wall. Portable, windowless air conditioners do a great job and they are available from 8,000 BTUs up to 14,000 BTUs in size.
