As Gujarat's Chief Minister and as India's Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has always been passionate about science and space. In 2008 then Gujarat CM Narendra Modi accompanied then President APJ Abdul Kalam and the Missile Man of India to the Space Applications Centre (SAC), ISRO, Ahmedabad. Their mission was to monitor the progress of Chandrayaan-I, due to launch in 2008.

Celebrating the victorious launch of Chandrayaan-l on Oct 22, 2008, then Gujarat CM Narendra Modi made a special trip to SAC Ahmedabad to cheer on the scientists. He also delivered the Gujarat Cabinet's resolution congratulating ISRO on this incredible accomplishment.

Declaring that ISRO was like a mini India, he extended a warm dinner invitation to all ISRO scientists. Keeping his word, in January 2009, Shri Modi organized a heartwarming 'Sneh-Milan' program, gathering nearly 3,000 family members of SAC and PRL scientists at Science City, Ahmedabad. 'Science has the capability to change history,' he said, later receiving images of the moon captured by Chandrayaan-l.

CM Modi's personal visit to congratulate the scientists in 2008 drew a massive turnout from the scientific community. As a packed audience listened, Modi emphasized how remote-sensing satellites can help fishermen and how modern space science consistently improves human welfare. As far back as 15 years ago, he saw science's potential in education, telemedicine, and in probing life's mysteries.
